Dia de Reyes

Kids leave their shoes out the night before and wake up hoping for a gift from the Reyes Magos. The panaderias sell roscon de reyes, the ring-shaped sweet bread with a plastic baby hidden inside. Whoever finds the baby hosts the next gathering, though everyone forgets by February.

Zjavenie Pana

The Christmas season ends with Epiphany, when the three kings are said to have visited the infant Jesus. In Slovak villages, priests bless homes by writing C+K+M (the initials of the three kings) in chalk above the door, a tradition that protects the household for the year. The chalk marks from previous years are never erased but are written over, creating layers of protection. In churches, the Three Kings procession reenacts the journey to Bethlehem, and children dressed as kings carry stars through the streets.
