Sv. Mikulas
Children wake to find gifts in their shoes, left by Saint Nicholas, or potatoes and coal from the devil, who accompanies him. In villages, young men dress as Saint Nicholas, an angel, and a devil and visit households, asking children if they have been good. The devil rattles his chains and threatens to take naughty children away, a tradition that is both terrifying and beloved. The Mikulas procession goes from house to house, and the children recite poems and sing songs to earn their gifts.
