Fishing Sezon

When the ocean calms between the rains, Freetown's fishing canoes go out before dawn and return with the catch that feeds the city. The canoes are painted in primary colors, the fishermen work in teams, and the nets are hauled by hand. The fish market at Tombo and the wharf at Kissy are alive with auction and argument at 6 AM. The freshest fish in Freetown is sold before most people are awake, and by noon, it is already someone's lunch.

On any dry weekend, the beaches of the Freetown peninsula are full of life. Lumley Beach, River Number 2, Sussex, and Tokeh are the destinations. The water is warm, the sand is white, and the beach bars play Afrobeats at a volume that would be illegal in any other country. Freetown residents take their beach culture seriously. The beach is not a luxury. It is a birthright, and the Atlantic is the city's backyard.

Freetown is built on hills that rise steeply from the harbor. Walking up any of these hills in the dry season gives you a view of the city, the ocean, and the mountains behind. The walk is exhausting, the humidity is oppressive, and the reward at the top is a breeze that feels like the air conditioning that half the city cannot afford. The hills are why Freetown exists where it does, and they are why the city will never run out of dramatic backdrops.
