The Mende warrior who led the Amistad revolt was from a village in southern Sierra Leone. After winning his freedom in American courts, he returned home. His village, Mani, still tells stories about him. He was stolen from his home, crossed an ocean in chains, seized a ship, testified before the Supreme Court of a foreign country, and came back. Most heroes are fictional. This one was real, and his village remembers exactly where he sat when he finally came home.
