The modern observance combines the historical significance of the uprising and the constitution with the religious feast of Sretenje. In recent years, the day has become a focus of national pride and political contestation, with different parties claiming different interpretations of Serbian statehood.
Marks two events: the beginning of the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottomans in 1804 and the adoption of the first Serbian constitution in 1835. The day is observed with a military parade in Belgrade and the awarding of state honors. Sretenje is also the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, a religious holiday that gives the day a dual significance.
The 1835 Sretenje Constitution was one of the most liberal in Europe at the time, and its anniversary is observed as a day of reflection on Serbian democracy. The constitution was written by Dimitrije Davidovic and adopted on Candlemas, the feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple.
