Fete du Souvenir de Thiaroye

Commemorates the victims of the 1944 Thiaroye massacre, when Senegalese soldiers who had fought for France in World War II were shot by their own officers for demanding their back pay. The massacre at the Thiaroye camp is a wound in Senegalese history that defines the relationship between Senegal and its former colonizer. The film Camp de Thiaroye by Ousmane Sembene brought the massacre to global attention.
