The Senegalese gendarmerie, one of the most respected institutions in the country, marks its founding with ceremonies at its headquarters in Dakar. The gendarmerie plays a dual role as both military and police force, and its officers are a constant presence on Senegalese roads and in rural areas where the regular police have little reach.
