Jour du Souvenir des Tirailleurs

Honors the Senegalese infantrymen who fought and died in French colonial armies across both world wars. The tirailleurs senegalais, recruited from across French West Africa, suffered enormous casualties and were often poorly treated by their French commanders. Ceremonies take place at the Monument des Tirailleurs in Dakar and at the military cemetery in Saint-Louis, the former colonial capital.
