Samoan Flag Day
In American Samoa (a U.S. territory), Flag Day on April 17 celebrates the first raising of the American flag in 1900. AHA!: American Samoa is the only inhabited U.S. territory where people are not automatic U.S. citizens : they are "U.S. nationals." They cannot vote in U.S. presidential elections, they have no voting representative in Congress, and yet they have the highest rate of military enlistment per capita of any U.S. territory or state. American Samoans fight and die for a flag under which they cannot vote. The irony is not lost on them.
