Fa'alavelave is the Samoan term for major family events : weddings, funerals, chiefly title bestowals : that require enormous financial contributions from extended family. AHA!: The average Samoan family spends more on fa'alavelave than on housing, education, or healthcare combined. A single funeral can cost a family $10,000-$50,000 in food, fine mats ('ie toga), and cash gifts. This is not optional : it is the social contract of Fa'a Samoa, and failing to contribute means losing face, losing standing, and potentially losing your family's protection.
