Buna Vestire
The Annunciation is one of the most important religious holidays in the Romanian Orthodox calendar, celebrating the moment when the Archangel Gabriel told the Virgin Mary she would give birth to Jesus. The tradition is to attend church, and in rural areas, the women bake "plicinte" (flatbreads) and share them with neighbors. In the villages of Maramures, the church bells ring at dawn, and the faithful light candles in every window. The Annunciation also marks the day when the swallows return, and the saying goes: "Buna Vestire, primavara pe ulite" (Annunciation, spring in the streets).
