The feast of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children and sailors. The tradition is for children to clean their boots and leave them by the door, and in the morning they find them filled with sweets and small gifts (if they have been good) or a stick (if they have been bad). St. Nicholas is one of the most beloved saints in Romania, and his day marks the beginning of the Christmas season. In the port city of Constanta, the sailors bring their ships to the harbor and attend a special service at the St. Nicholas Church, asking for protection on the Black Sea.
