A day for looking outside before deciding what to wear, carry, postpone, protect, harvest, or celebrate.
One of the most ancient and colorful traditions in Romania, the Maidens' Fair is held on Gaina Mountain in the Apuseni Mountains of Transylvania. The tradition dates back to the Dacians, when the young women of the region would gather on the mountain to dance, sing, and meet potential husbands. The fair begins with a procession of girls in traditional dress, each carrying a "zdrangan" (a decorated distaff), and continues with music, dancing, and the negotiation of dowries. The Maidens' Fair is not just a matchmaking event : it is a celebration of the mountain culture of the Moti people, who have lived in the Apuseni for over 2,000 years and who are among the oldest continuous communities in Europe.
