Ziua Independentei
The anniversary of the 1877 declaration of independence from the Ottoman Empire, celebrated with military ceremonies and school lessons on the War of Independence. The day is less well-known than National Day (December 1), but it is important because it marks the moment when Romania ceased to be a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire and became a sovereign nation. The Romanian army fought alongside the Russians at Plevna, Grivita, and Vidin, and the red-yellow-blue flag flew over the Danube for the first time.
