Unirea Principatelor
The anniversary of the 1859 union of Moldavia and Wallachia under Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the founding moment of the modern Romanian state. Celebrated with flag ceremonies, historical reenactments, and school lessons on the life of Cuza. In Iasi, the former capital of Moldavia, the day is marked with a military ceremony at the Cuza monument. The union was the culmination of a long national awakening, and Romanians see it as the first step toward the Great Union of 1918.
