Adormirea Maicii Domnului

The Catholic community observes the Assumption with a mass, and the tradition is to bring bouquets of herbs and flowers to the church to be blessed. The Assumption is one of the most important Catholic holidays in Romania (which is 87% Orthodox), and the churches are packed. In Nicula, Transylvania, the Assumption is celebrated with a major pilgrimage to the Monastery of Nicula, where the faithful walk barefoot for kilometers to reach the shrine of the Weeping Icon of the Virgin Mary. In the villages of Maramures, the day is marked with a procession through the fields, and the priest blesses the harvest with holy water.
