Sfantul Andrei

The feast of St. Andrew, the patron saint of Romania. The day is observed with a church service, and the tradition is to bless the houses with holy water. The tradition is also to put garlic on the doors and windows (to keep the vampires away) and to throw wheat on the roof (to keep the wolves away). St. Andrew's Day is not just a religious holiday : it is a folk holiday, and the belief is that the night of St. Andrew's is the night when the vampires and the strigoi (the undead) come out to dance. In the villages of Moldavia, the women stay up all night, guarding the house with garlic and holy water, and the tradition is to bake "sfinctisor" (little saints) : small breads that are shared with the neighbors.
