Luminatia

The Romanian Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1st, and the tradition is to visit the graves of the deceased, light candles, and share food and drink with the dead. The cemeteries are transformed into seas of candlelight, and the tradition is to bring a plate of coliva (boiled wheat with sugar and nuts) to the church, where it is blessed by the priest and distributed to the mourners. In the villages of Maramures, the Day of the Dead is one of the most important events of the year, and the tradition is to spend the entire night at the grave, drinking tuica and telling stories about the deceased. The Merry Cemetery of Sapanta takes on a special atmosphere on this night : the colorful crosses and the witty epitaphs seem to glow in the candlelight, and the boundary between the living and the dead seems to dissolve.
