Qatari Dress Day

A day celebrating traditional Qatari dress and textile heritage. Qatari men wear the thobe (also thawb), a long white robe with a mandarin collar, often starched and pressed to a crisp finish. The thobe is paired with the ghutra (headscarf), held in place by the agal (black cord), and the bisht (a black or brown cloak) for formal occasions. The Qatari ghutra is typically worn in the "cobra" style, with the ends swept up like a cobra's hood. Qatari women wear the abaya (black over-garment) and shayla (headscarf), often elaborately embroidered with gold or silver thread (khus al-Iraqi). On this day, fashion shows at Katara Cultural Village showcase both traditional and modern Qatari dress, and workshops teach the art of sadu weaving:the Bedouin craft of weaving geometric patterns into tent dividers and camel trappings using wool dyed with henna and indigo.
