Marking the iconic Pearl Monument that stands at the entrance to Doha's Corniche, this day celebrates the pearl industry that defined Qatar before oil. The monument, a giant fountain sculpture of an open oyster holding a pearl, was installed in 1990 and has become the most recognizable landmark in Doha. Before the discovery of oil in 1939, Qatar's economy depended almost entirely on pearl fishing. The pearls of the Gulf were prized worldwide for their lustre and quality, and Qatar's pearls were exported to India, Europe, and beyond. The Japanese invention of cultured pearls in the 1920s devastated the industry, and by the time oil was found, the pearl economy had nearly collapsed. This day serves as a reminder of Qatar's pre-oil identity.
