Apr Fool's Day

The day of pranks is celebrated in Liberia with the same enthusiasm as everywhere else, and the pranks range from the harmless to the elaborate. The Liberian English phrase for the day is "April Fool day," and the tradition is to play tricks on friends and family before noon. The radio stations broadcast fake news, the newspapers publish fake stories, and the social media is a minefield of misinformation. The Liberian sense of humor is sharp, and the pranks are creative. The most common prank is telling someone their car has been towed or their phone is ringing when it is not.

Dhow Regatta Day

Celebrating Qatar's dhow sailing tradition, this day features a regatta of traditional wooden dhows racing along the Doha Corniche. The dhow (safinat dhow) is the iconic vessel of the Gulf, used for pearl diving, fishing, and trade for over a millennium. Dhows are built by hand using teak imported from India, and the master shipwrights (galalif) still work in the Al Khor boatyards. There are three main types: the large baghlah for ocean voyages, the medium shu'ai for coastal fishing, and the bateel for racing. The regatta draws thousands of spectators and is accompanied by performances of sea songs (sawt) that echo the rhythms of the pearl divers.
