Desert Camping Season Opening

The beginning of Qatar's beloved desert camping season, when families escape the city for weekend camps (istibah) in the desert. From October to April, thousands of Qataris pitch tents and set up barasti (palm-frond shelters) in the desert south of Doha, near the Khor Al Udeid Inland Sea. Desert camping is a cherished tradition that connects Qataris to their Bedouin roots: families roast lamb on open fires, children ride ATVs over dunes, and nights are spent drinking karak tea under impossibly star-filled skies. The camps range from simple tents to elaborate setups with generators, satellite TV, and even air conditioning. The government designates specific camping zones, and the season is strictly regulated to protect the fragile desert ecosystem.
