Eid al-Fitr

The end of Ramadan. In Iraq, the celebration begins with the Eid prayer at the mosque, followed by family visits, new clothes, and the distribution of Eidi (gift money) to children. The Iraqi Eid table includes kleicha (date-filled pastries), and every family has a recipe that is better than their neighbor's. The kleicha debate is the Iraqi equivalent of the bagel debate: round or flat, date or walnut, and the correct answer is whatever your grandmother made. . 2026: Mar 31. 2027: Mar 20.

Al Zubarah Archaeology Day

A day celebrating Qatar's only UNESCO World Heritage Site, the abandoned pearl fishing town of Al Zubarah on the northwest coast. Founded in the 1760s, Al Zubarah was a thriving pearl trading and fishing settlement of up to 6,000 people before it was destroyed in 1811. Excavations since 2009 have revealed a planned city with streets, courtyard houses, a mosque, and a palatial compound. The town's economy was built entirely on pearl fishing and trade, connecting Qatar to the Indian Ocean world. Pottery from China, porcelain from Japan, and coins from Oman have been found in the ruins. The site's isolation and arid climate preserved mud-brick walls, plaster coatings, and even graffiti scratched into walls. On this day, free guided tours are offered, and the Qatar Museums authority hosts archaeological workshops for children.

Eid al-Fitr Celebrations

The three days of Eid al-Fitr are Qatar's biggest celebration. The morning begins with Eid prayers at the mosque (or the large open prayer grounds), followed by family visits, gift-giving, and feasting. Children receive eidiya (Eid money) in envelopes, and women apply elaborate henna designs. The men perform the ardha, and families exchange plates of luqaimat, ma'amoul (date-filled cookies), and baklava. The malls are packed with families shopping for new clothes, and the Corniche is lit with festive lights. The Qatar Charity organizes Eid celebrations for workers' camps, ensuring that everyone in the country can participate. Eid in Qatar is a time of abundance and generosity, and the tradition of giving is as important as the tradition of receiving. . 2026: Mar 31. 2027: Mar 20.

Ramadan in Qatar

Ramadan in Qatar is a month of fasting, prayer, and community. The iftar (breaking of the fast) begins with dates and water, followed by harees (wheat porridge with meat), machboos (rice with meat and spices), and luqaimat (sweet dumplings with date syrup). The mosques are full during Ramadan, and Taraweeh prayers are attended by men and women alike. The Grand Mosque and the Education City Mosque fill to capacity, and imams compete in Quran recitation. Work hours are reduced by law, and restaurants are closed during the day. The evenings come alive: families gather for suhoor (pre-dawn meal), young Qataris cruise the Corniche until dawn, and the Gharafa district's tent restaurants serve lamb tharid and foul medames to night crowds. The month ends with Eid al-Fitr, three days of feasting, visiting, and gift-giving. . 2026: Mar 31. 2027: Mar 20.
