World Calendar Day

Ramadan

In Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority nation, Ramadan transforms the country. The pre-dawn meal (sahur) is eaten at 3 AM, the fast lasts until sunset, and the breaking of the fast (buka puasa) is a communal event. In Jakarta, the Ramadan markets (Pasar Ramadhan) sell kolak (banana and coconut compote), es buah (fruit ice), and dates by the kilogram. The traffic at 5 PM is the worst of the year, because everyone is rushing home to break the fast, and the patience is the best of the year, because everyone is hungry. . 2026: Mar 1. 2027: Feb 18.

Laylat al-Qadr

The holiest night of the Islamic calendar, believed to fall on one of the odd-numbered nights of the last ten days of Ramadan (most commonly the 27th). In Qatar, the mosques are illuminated and filled beyond capacity. The Grand Mosque on the Corniche hosts all-night prayers, and families who have lost loved ones sponsor iftar meals for the congregation in their memory. The night is believed to be worth a thousand months of worship, and the faithful spend it in prayer, recitation, and reflection. It is also the night when Qatar's charitable giving peaks: zakat contributions are calculated and distributed, and the Qatar Charity and Eid Charity report their highest donation volumes of the year. . 2026: Mar 1. 2027: Feb 18.

Ramadan Night Markets

During Ramadan, Doha's nights come alive with special markets and events. The Souq Waqif extends its hours until 2 AM, and the streets fill with families shopping, eating, and socializing. Special Ramadan tents (khaymat Ramadan) are set up across the city, offering iftar buffets and suhoor meals. The Katara Cultural Village hosts a Ramadan Festival with Islamic art exhibitions, Quran recitation competitions, and lectures on spirituality. The night markets sell traditional Ramadan foods: kunafa (cheese pastry soaked in syrup), qatayef (stuffed pancakes), and balah el-sham (deep-fried dough sticks). Young Qataris cruise the Corniche until dawn, creating a festival atmosphere that makes the fasting day worthwhile. . 2026: Mar 1. 2027: Feb 18.
