Karak Tea Heritage Day

A celebration of Qatar's beloved karak tea, the spiced milk tea that is the unofficial national drink alongside gahwa. Karak chai, originally from the Indian subcontinent, was brought to Qatar by South Asian workers and has been thoroughly adopted into Qatari culture. The tea is made by boiling black tea leaves with milk, sugar, cardamom, saffron, and sometimes ginger or cinnamon, then simmering until it thickens. It is served in small paper cups from drive-through karak stalls that dot every road in Doha. The most famous is Karak tea at Souq Waqif, where young Qataris gather late into the night, cars double-parked, sipping tea and socializing. On this day, karak competitions are held, and the art of the perfect brew is debated with fierce passion.
