Temporada de Surf

Portugal is one of the best surfing destinations in the world, and the coastline of the Algarve and the Peniche region is a paradise for surfers. The most famous surf spot is Nazare, where the waves can reach 30 meters (100 feet) and the biggest wave ever surfed was recorded in 2020 by the Portuguese surfer Hugo Viana. The waves of Nazare are caused by the Nazare Canyon, an underwater canyon that funnels the swell of the Atlantic Ocean into the bay, creating some of the biggest waves in the world. The surf season runs from October to March, when the Atlantic storms bring the biggest swells, and the town of Nazare becomes a magnet for big-wave surfers from around the world. The Portuguese have a long tradition of surfing, and the sport is growing rapidly, especially among young people.
