Dia de Sao Francisco
The feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and ecology, is celebrated in the monasteries and convents of Portugal. The tradition is to bring pets and farm animals to the church for a blessing, and the children bring their dogs, cats, canaries, and even goldfish. In Lisbon, the Church of Sao Francisco holds a special mass where the faithful bring their pets, and the priest blesses each animal individually.
