The anniversary of the December 13, 1981, imposition of martial law by General Wojciech Jaruzelski. The martial law lasted until July 1983, and during that time, the Solidarity movement was banned, thousands of activists were arrested, and dozens were killed. The day is observed with ceremonies at the Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers in Gdansk and at the sites of internment camps. Candles are lit in windows across Poland at 7:00 PM to remember the victims.
