The day honoring miners and the patron saint of miners, St. Barbara. In the Silesian coal-mining region, the day is celebrated with the Barborka festival, which includes a miners' parade, the bestowing of the pickaxe (a ceremonial mining tool), and the drinking of beer and vodka. The Wieliczka Salt Mine, which has been producing salt since the 13th century and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also celebrates St. Barbara's Day with underground masses and concerts in the mine's spectacular salt chambers.
