Rocznica Wybuchu II Wojny Swiatowej
The commemoration of the September 1, 1939, invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, which began World War II. The day is observed with ceremonies at Westerplatte near Gdansk, where the first battle of the war was fought, and at the monument to the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw. Air raid sirens sound at 4:45 AM, the exact time of the first bombing. The day is a solemn reminder that Poland lost six million citizens during the war, half of them Jewish.
