The day when Polish children receive gifts from Swiety Mikolaj (St. Nicholas). The tradition is to put a shoe or a sock by the window (or under the pillow), and in the morning, the good children find candy and small gifts, while the naughty ones find a twig (rozga). In some regions, St. Nicholas comes in person, wearing a bishop's mitre and carrying a crozier, and asks the children whether they have been good this year.
