Dzien Papieza Jana Pawla II

The day commemorating Pope John Paul II (Karol Wojtyla), who was born in Wadowice, Poland, and was elected pope on October 16, 1978. He was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years, and his election sent shockwaves through the communist bloc. His first pilgrimage to Poland in 1979 drew millions, and his words "Be not afraid" became a rallying cry for the Solidarity movement. The day is observed with masses, concerts, and celebrations in his hometown of Wadowice, where they sell the famous kremowki (cream cakes) that he loved as a boy.
