The anniversary of the 1980 Gdansk Agreement, when the Solidarity (Solidarnosc) trade union was born. Lech Walesa signed the agreement at the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk, and the Solidarity movement became the first independent trade union in the communist bloc. It grew to 10 million members, and it was the beginning of the end of communism in Eastern Europe. The day is observed with ceremonies at the Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers in Gdansk, and the sound of the shipyard whistle echoes across the city.
