Pista ng Itim na Nazareno
The most important religious procession in the Philippines, held annually in Quiapo, Manila. Over 8 million devotees join the procession, making it the largest religious procession in the world. The Black Nazarene is a life-size statue of Jesus carrying the cross, brought to Manila from Mexico in 1606. The procession can last up to 22 hours as the statue is carried from the Quirino Grandstand to the Quiapo Church. Devotees throw white towels to men on the carriage, who wipe the statue and throw the towels back. Believers say touching the Black Nazarene can cure illness, bring good luck, and grant wishes. Many devotees walk barefoot as a form of sacrifice.
