Held in Batangas City, the Sublian Festival celebrates the subli, a traditional Filipino dance that originated in the province of Batangas. The subli is a dance of devotion to the Holy Cross, and the dancers move in a slow, measured rhythm that represents the search for the cross. The name comes from "subsub" (stooped) and "bali" (broken), describing the posture of the dancers. The festival features street dancing competitions, a trade fair, and the coronation of the festival queen. The subli is one of the oldest Filipino dances, and it has been performed for over 300 years.
