Araw ng Kalayaan

The anniversary of the 1898 declaration of independence from Spain, declared by Emilio Aguinaldo from the balcony of his house in Kawit, Cavite. The celebration includes a flag-raising ceremony at the Aguinaldo Shrine, a military parade, and the flying of the Philippine flag. The day is both celebration and reflection, because independence was short-lived. The Philippines was colonized by the United States from 1898 to 1946, and the Philippine-American War (1899-1902) killed over 200,000 Filipinos. The day is a reminder that freedom has always been fought for and never freely given.
