Regional/Cultural Day
Bagong Taon
The Filipino new year begins with fireworks, family gatherings, and the traditional midnight feast called media noche. Families serve pancit (for long life), lumpia, lechon, and fruit salad. The traditions include wearing polka dots (for money), jumping at midnight (to grow taller), and filling the house with round fruits (for prosperity). Children toss coins at the door, and families open all windows and doors to let good fortune enter. The noise from fireworks, trumpets, and pots and pans drives away evil spirits. The streets erupt with firecrackers, and the sky is lit with pyrotechnics. The Filipino new year is loud, festive, and full of hope.
