The anniversary of the 1983 assassination of Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., the opposition leader who was shot at the Manila International Airport upon his return from exile in the United States. The assassination was witnessed by millions on television, and it was the catalyst for the EDSA Revolution. Ninoy's famous words, "The Filipino is worth dying for," are inscribed on his tomb. The day is observed with ceremonies, rallies, and the reminder that democracy was paid for with blood. The Manila International Airport was renamed Ninoy Aquino International Airport in his honor.
