The anniversary of the 1946 recognition of Philippine independence by the United States. Until 1962, July 4 was celebrated as Independence Day, but President Diosdado Macapagal moved Independence Day to June 12 and made July 4 a friendship day. The day is observed with diplomatic events, cultural exchanges, and the reminder that the relationship between the Philippines and the United States is long, complicated, and deeply personal for the millions of Filipinos who have family in America.
