EDSA Revolution Anniversary
The anniversary of the 1986 EDSA Revolution, when the Filipino people overthrew the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos in a peaceful revolution. Over 2 million people gathered on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Manila, armed only with rosaries, flowers, and food. The revolution was triggered by the assassination of Ninoy Aquino in 1983 and the fraudulent election of 1986. The day is both celebration and reflection, because the promises of democracy, prosperity, and justice have not been fully realized. Yellow ribbons and the Laban sign are the symbols of the day.
