Dia de la Bandera
The anniversary of the 1880 Battle of Arica, when the Peruvian forces defended the Morro de Arica against the Chilean attack. The day is observed with ceremonies, and the reminder that the War of the Pacific (1879-1884) was one of the most devastating wars in South American history (Peru lost the province of Tarapaca to Chile). The day is both remembrance and pride, and the tradition is to fly the Peruvian flag on every building.
