Peru is the birthplace of the potato, and there are over 3,000 varieties of potato in Peru. The potato was first domesticated in the Lake Titicaca region over 7,000 years ago, and it was the staple food of the Inca Empire. The Dia de la Papa is celebrated with potato tastings, potato-cooking competitions, and the reminder that the potato saved Europe from famine (the potato was brought to Europe by the Spanish in the 16th century).
