Carnaval Season
The Carnaval is the biggest party in Peru, and it is held annually in the four days before Ash Wednesday. The Carnaval includes a parade, a carnival queen, and the tradition of the yunza (a tree decorated with gifts, and the couples dance around it until someone cuts it down). The Carnaval is most famous in the highlands (Cajamarca, Ayacucho, and Puno), where the tradition is to throw water at each other (the water-throwing is a pre-Columbian tradition that symbolizes the coming of the rainy season). . 2026: Feb 18. 2027: Feb 10.
