Dia de la Virgen del Carmen

The Virgin of Carmen is the patron saint of the mestizo people, and her feast is celebrated with the most spectacular folk festival in the Cusco region. The festival includes the dance of the contradanza (a satirical dance that mocks the Spanish colonial masters), the dance of the qhapac negro (a dance that honors the black slaves who worked in the mines), and the dance of the saqra (a dance of the devils, who are not evil but mischievous). The Virgin of Carmen is the protector of the people, and the tradition is to carry her image through the streets in a procession that lasts all night.
