Dia de la Pollera

A celebration of the pollera, the national dress of Panama and one of the most elaborate traditional costumes in the world. The pollera is made from white cotton decorated with embroidery, lace, and pearls, and can cost up to $10,000. It takes up to a year to make a single pollera, and the finest examples are passed from mother to daughter for generations. The pollera is worn with tembleques, jeweled hair ornaments that sparkle like chandeliers. During the Festival de la Mejorana en Guarare and the Carnival of Las Tablas, women compete for the title of the most beautiful pollera in Panama. The pollera is not just a dress but a cultural institution that embodies Panamanian identity.
