Dia de los Martires
The anniversary of the 1964 Flag Riot, when 21 Panamanian students were killed by US troops while trying to raise the Panamanian flag in the Canal Zone. The day is observed with solemn ceremonies and the reminder that the Panama Canal was once under US control and Panamanians had to fight for their sovereignty. In Panama City, the Avenue of the Martyrs is decorated with flowers and the names of the fallen are read aloud in schools.
