The anniversary of the 1821 first cry of independence from Spain, observed with ceremonies and the reminder that Panama was the first province in Central America to declare independence from Spain. The independence was short-lived, as Panama joined Gran Colombia in 1822 and did not become an independent republic until 1903. In the interior towns, schoolchildren reenact the declaration and march through the plazas.
