The anniversary of the founding of Panama Viejo in 1519, the first European city on the Pacific coast of the Americas. The ruins of Panama Viejo still stand in modern Panama City, a UNESCO World Heritage site where visitors can see the remains of the cathedral tower and the original street grid. The city was destroyed by the pirate Henry Morgan in 1671, leading to the founding of Casco Viejo, the current old quarter, in 1673.
