Congreso de la Cultura Afropanamena
A celebration of the African heritage in Panama, which dates back to the Spanish colonial period when enslaved Africans were brought to work on the isthmus. The Afro-Panamanian community includes the descendants of colonial-era slaves, the Afro-Antillean immigrants who came to build the canal in the early 20th century, and contemporary immigrants from Colombia, Haiti, and elsewhere. The congress features Congo dance performances, a tradition from the Caribbean coast that combines African rhythms with Catholic and indigenous elements, along with drumming competitions, storytelling, and discussions of Afro-Panamanian history and identity. . 2026: Mar 4. 2027: Mar 23.
