Assomption

National holiday. A significant day for Burkina's Catholic community. Churches fill, choirs sing, and afterward everyone gathers for a meal that always includes riz gras. The faith runs deep in the Centre-Ouest and the processions through Koudougou and Ouaga are a sight that stays with you.

Aniversario del Canal de Panama

Not a public holiday but a day of national pride commemorating the opening of the Panama Canal on August 15, 1914. The canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and generates over $2 billion per year in tolls. It was under US control from 1914 to 1999 and was transferred to Panama on December 31, 1999. The expanded canal, opened in 2016, can accommodate neo-Panamax vessels carrying up to 14,000 containers. The canal is Panama's most important economic asset and the engineering marvel that defined the 20th century.

Dia de la Asuncion

The Catholic community observes the Assumption with mass and prayers for the safety of sailors and fishermen. Panama's long maritime tradition, anchored by the Panama Canal, gives the day special resonance in coastal communities. In the San Blas Islands, Kuna fishermen return to port early to attend services with their families before heading back to the turquoise Caribbean waters.
